The Home Office wants to phase them out as they cause 87,000 injuries a year. But what's the alternative? I've never had a decent pint out of a plastic glass. The closest to good ones were those at St Austell's last Celtic Beer Festival which were quite sturdy, but still, from recollection, had a faint plastic taste and also felt completely wrong - much too light.
Hi Darren,
I used to feel the same as you because of those flimsy horrible disposable things you find in beer tents at annual shows etc, but I have used very sturdy, plastic pint glasses on a couple of occasions this past last year and I recall commenting to a friend that I may not have noticed, it was just the weight that gave it away - I wouldn't say they were 'too' light, I was actually very surprised at the quality. I would have no problem supping out of them if they are up to that standard. I tend to avoid the town centre pubs and clubs on a Friday or Saturday evening, there's just too much silly behaviour - If using plastic glasses in these higher-risk establishments means there's slightly less burden on the NHS or less risk of losing an eye then I'm happy.
